 Sermon -- June 21, 2009 Minimize

Paralysis, Panic, or Peace

How do you react when you encounter wild, threatening, or uncontrollable events? When the nine-foot-tall Goliath challenged King Saul and the Israelite army, they were paralyzed with fear. When the disciples’ boat started sinking in a fierce storm, they panicked. The youthful David, however, heard Goliath’s taunts and calmly offered to fight the giant. Relying on his expertise as a shepherd and his faith in God, he brought down his foe.

But how many of us are calm and faithful in crisis? More often, we are like the disciples, shaking Jesus and saying, “Do something! Don’t you care that we’re sinking (unemployed, ill, depressed, losing our minds, having crazy weather)?!” God may be our peace, but we still experience panic or paralysis before we remember--oh yeah, there’s God! We can turn to God for help, for strength, for peace, for knowledge of what to do. The point is to turn to God. In the midst of any crisis, God is waiting to help us. To turn our panic or paralysis into peace.

The latest addition to the summer reading list

The Richest Man Who Ever Lived by Steven Scott has been added to the summer reading list. The Youth Groups are encouraged to read this book which takes the book of Proverbs and turns it into a guide for how to live happily and successfully. Not only the youth, but all of us could use this!

Is there a book that has been particularly meaningful in your spiritual development? Or perhaps a movie that you can watch with your family that spurs a conversation about faith? Send your suggestion to Jim Nail or to the church office and we'll add it to the list!
